What awaits Roblox in Kazakhstan, as told by the Vice-Minister

Roblox remains widely used in Kazakhstan, with millions of young players spending billions of hours on the platform each year. Despite its popularity, the government is preparing new rules for online platforms—but the gaming site will likely avoid restrictions under the proposed law.

The Ministry of Culture and Information is working on a draft law to regulate online platforms and media. One key measure would ban children under 16 from creating accounts on such services. Officials say the goal is to cut down on illegal content and improve child safety online.

Roblox, however, will not face these restrictions. Current Kazakhstani law classifies it as a game platform rather than an online platform. Deputy Minister Yevgeny Kochetov confirmed that no plans exist to block or limit access to the site. The platform’s simple registration and open chat features have made it a favourite among schoolchildren. Yet these same qualities have also drawn concerns, as criminals could exploit in-game chats to contact young users. Despite this, the ministry has received no formal complaints from parents about Roblox. With around 151.5 million active users each quarter, players collectively spend nearly 40 billion hours on the platform. No further changes or updates regarding Roblox’s status in Kazakhstan have been announced.

The proposed law would tighten rules for online platforms but leave Roblox unaffected. Children under 16 could still register on the gaming site, as it falls outside the new regulations. For now, the platform remains accessible without restrictions in Kazakhstan.
