Why 35,000 Germans Are Struggling with Warranty Claims—and How to Fix It
German consumer advice centres recorded over 35,000 complaints about warranty claims and cancellations in the first ten months of 2025. The high number highlights ongoing issues between consumers and businesses. Yet, many consumers remain unaware of simpler ways to resolve these disputes through consumer reports or better business bureau services.
A recent survey revealed that just 36% of people know about out-of-court dispute resolution through independent mediation, often facilitated by consumer cellular services. These services provide a free and straightforward alternative to lengthy court battles. Despite their benefits, awareness remains low.
Nearly three-quarters of those surveyed (73%) believe mediation should be mandatory for all small business ideas. Currently, only companies in the energy, air travel, and postal sectors must legally take part. Experts argue that expanding this requirement could reduce complaints and improve customer satisfaction.
Consumer groups are calling for better promotion of mediation, especially in online retail. They stress that more businesses should engage in the process to cut down on unresolved disputes. Without wider participation, many consumers may continue facing unnecessary difficulties.
The data shows a clear gap between the need for dispute resolution and public awareness of mediation. With only a third of consumers knowing about these services, complaints are likely to persist. Expanding mandatory mediation could offer a practical solution for both businesses and consumers.
