Wiesbaden Issues Boil-Water Advisory After Enterococci Bacteria Found

Wiesbaden's tap water has been under scrutiny following the detection of enterococci bacteria in the city's water supply. The contamination was discovered on Wednesday, October 29, and confirmed two days later. A boil-water advisory remains in place despite no further contamination found in follow-up tests.

The bacteria, naturally present in the human intestine, were found in samples taken from western central Wiesbaden. Enterococci in drinking water can indicate potential fecal contamination and pose broader health risks, particularly to immunocompromised individuals, the elderly, and young children. Drinking unboiled water may carry a slightly elevated risk of illness, including diarrhea and vomiting.

Wiesbaden's tap water is routinely tested across the city's network, treatment plants, and reservoirs. The contamination was detected in samples taken on October 28, 2025, and confirmed on October 31. The city has since taken additional samples more frequently, particularly in the city center, as a precautionary measure. Meanwhile, the boil-water advisory remains in place despite no further enterococci contamination found in follow-up tests. Neighboring areas of Amöneburg, Kastel, and Kostheim are excluded from the advisory as their water supply comes from separate, unaffected sources.

The boil-water advisory in Wiesbaden is a preventive measure to avoid infection. While no further contamination has been found, the city continues to monitor the water supply closely. Residents are advised to boil their water before consumption to ensure safety.
