Woman dies after Mexico’s Interoceanic Train derailment sparks outrage and grief
A woman named Hilda has died from injuries sustained in the recent Interoceanic Train derailment. The accident left 17 people hospitalised, with many later moved to medical centres in Mexico City and other locations. President Claudia Sheinbaum has since addressed the tragedy and a controversy surrounding her hospital visit.
The derailment caused severe injuries, including to Hilda, who was rushed to a nearby hospital in Oaxaca. Despite medical efforts, she could not survive due to the extent of her wounds. President Sheinbaum later offered her condolences to Hilda’s family.
A photograph taken during the president’s hospital visit sparked criticism. The image showed Sheinbaum with an injured patient who could not sit up because of a neck injury. She later clarified that the photo had been taken at the patient’s request. Of the 17 hospitalised, several were transferred for further treatment at a general hospital. The incident has drawn attention to both the accident’s impact and the response from authorities.
The derailment has left families grieving and survivors recovering in different medical facilities. President Sheinbaum’s visit to hospitals, though intended to show support, became a point of debate. Officials have yet to provide further updates on the ongoing investigations or the condition of other injured passengers.
