Five Years in Prison for the Killing of an Infant in North Rhine-Westphalia - Woman jailed for five years after suffocating her newborn in Germany
A 38-year-old woman has been sentenced to five years in prison for killing her newborn child. The verdict was delivered by a regional court in Kleve, North Rhine-Westphalia, following a disturbing case that unfolded in August 2025.
The woman gave birth to the child alive in Goch, a town in North Rhine-Westphalia. Shortly after, she suffocated the infant. Initially, she told authorities the baby had been stillborn, but her statements about the body's location were inconsistent.
Police later found the infant's remains near her home. An autopsy confirmed the child had been alive at birth, contradicting the defendant's claims. Prosecutors argued that her conflicting accounts pointed to deliberate concealment of the crime. The court ultimately convicted her of manslaughter, leading to the five-year prison sentence.
The case centred on evidence that the child was born alive and later killed. The woman's inconsistent statements and the discovery of the remains played key roles in the conviction. The sentence was handed down after a trial at the Kleve regional court.
