Woman Sentenced for Stabbing Husband After Years of Abuse
A woman in Neryungri has been sentenced for stabbing her husband to death after years of domestic violence. The defendant, who previously led an organization against domestic violence, was given a three-year prison term, suspended with a two-year probation period.
In December 2024, the woman, who had endured constant arguing and domestic violence, snapped. She stabbed her husband twice in the back with a knife, believing she had killed him. However, he survived the attack. The court dismissed her claim of direct self-defense, ruling that the attack was the result of long-standing hostility.
Both spouses testified to a troubled relationship, but the defendant's partial admission of guilt and the victim's unlawful conduct were considered mitigating circumstances. The court acknowledged that the defendant had suffered past domestic violence but found that she had not acted in self-defense at the time of the stabbing.
The defendant was sentenced to three years in prison, suspended with a two-year probation period. She was charged with intentional infliction of grievous bodily harm using a weapon. The court's ruling serves as a reminder that while domestic violence is a serious issue, it does not justify violent retaliation.
