Woodward's 'War' Exposes US Efforts to Reshape Middle East Power Dynamics
A new book by journalist Bob Woodward, 'War', reveals US efforts to reshape Middle East power dynamics. The US sought to normalize relations between Israel and Saudi Arabia, aiming to isolate Iran. This diplomatic push coincided with defence cooperation talks between the US and Saudi Arabia.
In 2023, the US came close to finalizing a defence agreement with Saudi Arabia, promising military support if the kingdom was attacked. However, talks collapsed despite ongoing negotiations, even after Israel's military operations in Gaza. Meanwhile, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS) expressed urgency in pursuing normalization with Israel, hoping to complete the process within a few months before the US election season.
In January 2024, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken discussed Israel-Saudi Arabia normalization with MBS. Later, Senator Lindsey Graham pressed MBS on the issue, linking it to US defence cooperation. MBS, however, hinted at alternative defence options, stating he could acquire a nuclear bomb from Pakistan if needed. This statement came after Pakistan and Saudi Arabia signed a strategic defence pact in the autumn of 2023, their first formal security agreement.
MBS also expressed interest in enriching uranium for nuclear power, raising international concerns about nuclear weapons. Throughout, Washington was pushing for both Israel-Saudi Arabia normalization and a defence pact.
Woodward's 'War' sheds light on the complex diplomatic manoeuvrings in the Middle East. The US's dual efforts to normalize Israel-Saudi Arabia relations and secure a defence pact with Saudi Arabia highlight the region's shifting power dynamics and ongoing security concerns.
