Man Strikes Tram Driver During Argument with Crutch - Würzburg rocked by violent attacks as suspects resist police in custody
A series of violent incidents in Würzburg has left several people injured and multiple suspects in custody. One attack involved a tram driver assaulted with a walking cane, while another saw a man wielding a knife at the city's main train station. Police have since made arrests in both cases.
The first incident began when a 41-year-old man attacked a 42-year-old tram driver with a walking cane. The assault followed the driver's refusal to give the suspect a cigarette. After striking the driver, the attacker fled the scene but was later tracked down and arrested.
During the arrest, the man and his 47-year-old partner violently resisted officers. Both suspects were temporarily restrained after repeatedly assaulting police. At one point, the pair fell onto the tram tracks, but the driver managed to retreat into the vehicle and call for backup. One officer suffered injuries in the struggle. The suspect's aggression continued even after being placed in a police car. He attempted to kick out a window and later, in the holding cell, tried to kick and bite officers. Authorities have charged him with aggravated assault, assaulting law enforcement, property damage, threats, and insults. In a separate incident, a 35-year-old Afghan national was provisionally arrested following a knife attack at Würzburg's main train station. Three men, described as apparent random victims, sustained light injuries. The attacker targeted members of Jehovah's Witnesses before passers-by and security personnel intervened to subdue him.
The tram driver and injured officers are receiving medical attention where needed. The arrested suspects remain in custody, with one facing multiple serious charges. Police investigations into both incidents are ongoing.
