WWII veterans return to Europe for emotional Battle of the Bulge anniversary
A group of World War II veterans from Boston has set off on an emotional journey to Europe. They will visit key sites they helped liberate, including Belgium for the anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge. Among them is 101-year-old Les Schrenk, a former B-17 crew member with a remarkable story of survival and friendship.
The trip was organised by Boston Police Officer Andrew Biggio, who has led over 20 similar journeys for more than 80 veterans. Funded entirely by donations and community fundraisers, the effort ensures these men can return to the places they once fought for.
The veterans will spend the coming days retracing their steps across the Europe map. Their visit coincides with commemorations of one of the war’s most intense battles. For many, this journey offers a chance to reflect on their service and the lasting bonds formed in its aftermath.
