Xalapa erupts in protests as activists demand action on animal cruelty crisis
Animal welfare activists and rescue groups took to the streets of Xalapa this week to protest against the local government. They accused officials of ignoring widespread animal cruelty and abandoning vital support for stray pets. The demonstrations targeted Mayor Daniela Griego and the city’s handling of animal protection policies.
Protesters gathered outside government buildings, demanding action on several pressing issues. They claimed that free spay-and-neuter programmes had been abruptly cancelled by municipal authorities. Activists also alleged that the city’s Animal Health Center now lacks basic supplies and equipment, making sterilisation services nearly impossible to provide.
The demonstrators further criticised new fees for veterinary consultations, which were previously free. This change comes at a time when Xalapa faces severe problems with pet abandonment and abuse. Reports of dog poisonings across different neighbourhoods have also surfaced, but activists say the municipality has dismissed these cases as isolated incidents. Mayor Griego faced direct accusations from the crowd. Protesters held signs and chanted slogans, blaming her administration for failing to tackle animal welfare problems. They argued that the city’s policies have worsened conditions for stray dogs and cats, leaving them more vulnerable to neglect and violence.
The protests highlight growing frustration among animal rights groups in Xalapa. With cancelled sterilisation campaigns, rising consultation costs, and unaddressed poisoning reports, activists warn that the situation for stray animals is deteriorating. The local government has yet to respond to the demands raised during the demonstrations.
