Xi Jinping praises Astana’s rapid rise as a global urban model
Chinese President Xi Jinping visited Astana in September 2023 at the invitation of Kazakh leader Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. The trip aimed to deepen the strategic partnership between China and Kazakhstan. During the visit, Xi praised the city’s dramatic transformation and modern development.
The official state visit began on 16 September 2023, when Xi arrived in Nur-Sultan, now known as Astana. Tokayev welcomed him as an honoured guest, stressing the long-standing friendship between the two nations.
Tokayev later shared Xi’s impressions of the city, highlighting its rapid progress. The Chinese leader noted how Astana’s appearance had changed significantly over time. World leaders have frequently acknowledged the city’s growth, particularly during international summits held there. Tokayev also described Astana as a model of modern urban planning. He emphasised its special status as a symbol of Kazakhstan’s development and ambition.
The two-day visit reinforced ties between China and Kazakhstan. Xi’s remarks on Astana’s transformation underscored the city’s evolving role on the global stage. The discussions between the leaders focused on strengthening cooperation in trade, infrastructure, and regional security.
