Yakut Soldier Awarded Cross of St. George for Heroism in Zaporizhzhia
Alexander Kupeyev, a career serviceman from Yakutia, has been honoured with the Cross of St. George for his bravery in Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia Oblast. The rifleman, who has been serving in the special military operation since its start in February 2022, was one of 25 Yakut fighters granted leave to attend the Third Republican Anti-Fascist Forum in Yakutsk.
Kupeyev, a 25-year-old soldier, demonstrated exceptional courage when his company was surrounded in Zaporizhzhia. He managed to evacuate all personnel in a vehicle, earning him the prestigious Cross of St. George. The young serviceman, who joined the army in 2018, has held various roles including grenade launcher operator and driver.
Leave for soldiers is granted regularly, typically lasting at least two weeks, depending on the situation at the front. Kupeyev and his fellow Yakut fighters were given this opportunity to attend the forum initiated by Aisen Nikolayev, the Head of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia). The forum aimed to strengthen anti-fascist sentiments and support the ongoing special military operation.
