Yakutia Ordered to Rebuild Demolished WWII Monument After Court Ruling
A court ruling has ordered local authorities in Yakutia to rebuild a historic monument that was demolished in the village of Verkhnevilyuisk. The monument, 'To the Soldiers from These Parts Who Fell in the Great Patriotic War (1941–1945)', was removed between 2015 and 2017 despite being a protected cultural and historical site.
The monument, once a symbol of remembrance and respect for the fallen soldiers, was dismantled during this period. Despite its significance and protected status, local authorities at both district and rural settlement levels failed to preserve or restore it. This inaction has now resulted in a court order, mandating the reconstruction of the lost cultural heritage site. The court ruled in favor of the prosecutor’s office, stating that the authorities of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) and the local Verkhnevilyuisk municipalities must rebuild the destroyed cultural landmark.
The monument's removal was a loss to the cultural heritage of the region. The court's decision aims to rectify this, ensuring that the memory of the fallen soldiers is once again honored and preserved for future generations.
