Year in Review and Christmas Greetings from the Mayor

Wiesbaden has marked 2025 with a strong focus on social unity and shared responsibility. Despite global crises like the ongoing war in Ukraine and Middle East conflicts, the city has pushed forward with projects to strengthen community bonds. Lord Mayor Gert-Uwe Mende’s vision of a ‘social city’ has shaped new housing, infrastructure, and support services throughout the year.

The city administration, led by Mayor Mende, rolled out multiple social infrastructure projects in 2025. These included expansions at the Moritz-Lang-Heim care facility, new community centres in Kastel-Kostheim and Nordenstadt, and upgrades to the Gräselberg neighbourhood hub. Funding was secured through Hessian state programmes like Sozialer Zusammenhalt and Nachhaltige Stadtentwicklung, ensuring long-term support for growth and renewal.

Efforts to improve housing and neighbourhood life also took centre stage. The Amt für Soziale Arbeit promoted integrated housing schemes in areas like Kärntner Viertel and hosted Wohnprojektetage events to bring residents together. Political groups, including the SPD, backed initiatives for older adults, while events like DesignDialog brought planners and locals into discussions about the city’s future.

Solidarity remained a visible theme in Wiesbaden. A human chain event earlier in the year showed widespread support for the Jewish community, standing against discrimination and defending religious freedom. Traditional festivals and community gatherings further reinforced the city’s spirit of togetherness.

Over the holiday season, Mayor Mende acknowledged those working through Christmas—healthcare staff, emergency responders, and essential service providers. He urged residents to uphold respect, open dialogue, and mutual support as core values. His call echoed the city’s broader push for a diverse, tolerant, and connected community.

Wiesbaden’s 2025 initiatives have laid groundwork for a more inclusive and resilient city. Affordable housing, expanded social services, and community-driven projects now form the backbone of its development plan. With ongoing state funding and local engagement, these measures aim to address both immediate needs and long-term challenges in the years ahead.
