Yekaterinburg brings back Rospetchat kiosks after near-extinction on city streets

Yekaterinburg is reviving Rospetchat kiosks after nearly 70 newspaper stands vanished from its streets. The city administration endorsed the move, aiming to restore a service that had dwindled to just 17 remaining kiosks earlier this year.

The decline started when a reform of street trading led to the closure of 42 out of 87 Rospetchat kiosks. By early this year, only a fraction stayed open, leaving the city far short of federal requirements. Under current regulations, Yekaterinburg needs roughly 1,000 such kiosks to meet demand.

The reinstalled kiosks will gradually return to Yekaterinburg’s streets over the next two years. With lower rents and designated locations, the city expects more entrepreneurs to seize the opportunity. The plan aims to restore a network that once served thousands of residents daily.
