Yekaterinburg Mayor Succession: Orlov Hopes to Retain Post with Governor's Support
Governor Denis Pasler has opened the discussion on Yekaterinburg's mayoral succession. Alexei Orlov, who has served as mayor since February 2021, hopes to retain his position with the governor's support. The city council will evaluate two candidates, including Orlov, for the post.
Orlov, previously the first deputy governor of Sverdlovsk Oblast, took office in 2021. His term expires in February. Direct mayoral elections in the region were abolished in 2018, making the governor's nomination process crucial. Governor Pasler will propose two candidates this year, with Orlov and Evgeny Kuyvashev being the contenders. Orlov has expressed his desire to run again, backed by the regional governor and deputies, but has no ambitions beyond the mayoral role.
The city council will assess the candidates, with Alexei Orlov's re-election as mayor being a key topic. The governor's nomination process will shape Yekaterinburg's political landscape for the coming term.
