ZDF reappoints Dr. Norbert Himmler as director-general for second term
Dr. Norbert Himmler will continue as director-general of ZDF after a strong vote of confidence. The Broadcasting Council confirmed his second term with overwhelming support. His new five-year appointment begins on 15 March 2027.
The council backed Himmler in a decisive vote, with 48 of 53 members approving his reappointment. Gerda Hasselfeldt, chair of the Broadcasting Council, praised his leadership and long-term strategy for the public broadcaster.
Since taking charge in 2022, Himmler has pushed ZDF towards digital innovation. Investments in the ZDFmediathek app and AI-driven personalisation have expanded streaming options. Future plans include more interactive, on-demand content—particularly for younger audiences—alongside sustainable, cross-platform production by 2026. After the vote, Himmler thanked the council for their trust. He reaffirmed his commitment to preparing ZDF for the challenges of the digital age.
Himmler's second term officially starts in mid-March. The broadcaster's focus remains on digital growth, youth engagement, and adaptable production methods. The council's strong endorsement signals continued support for his strategic direction.
