Zelenskyy Taps Digital Reformer Mykhailo Fedorov as Ukraine’s New Defence Minister
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has proposed Mykhailo Fedorov as the country’s new defence minister. The 33-year-old currently serves as First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Innovation, Education, Science, and Technology. His potential appointment follows years of high-profile work in government digital reform and modernization of state processes, earning him international recognition including places on Forbes’ ‘30 Under 30’ and TIME100 Next lists. Born on January 21, 1991, in Vasylivka, Zaporizhzhia Oblast, Fedorov studied sociology at Zaporizhzhia National University. Before entering public service, he worked in digital communications and marketing, and later led the digital strategy for Zelenskyy’s presidential campaign in 2019. After the election victory, Fedorov was appointed Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Transformation, overseeing the modernization of government services. By 2023, he had become First Deputy Prime Minister, overseeing innovation, education, science, and technology. Zelenskyy has praised his ability to deliver results, particularly in digitizing state processes. The president now believes Fedorov can bring the same transformative approach to the defence sector, marking a shift in leadership style for the role. If confirmed, Fedorov would take charge of Ukraine’s defence ministry at a critical time, with a background in digital reform and government efficiency.
