Zermatt reverses Christmas tree ban after furious resident backlash

Zermatt’s decision to skip traditional Christmas trees on Bahnhofstrasse this year has caused a backlash among residents. The announcement, made in a joint press release by Zermatt Tourism and the local council on November 28, was met with anger, with many calling it a 'disgrace' and 'embarrassing' on social media. Authorities now admit they misjudged the situation and are working to address the concerns.

The original plan to remove the trees came after officials felt they were being overshadowed by private residents’ elaborate light displays along the street. Instead of standing out, the trees appeared 'lost in a sea of lights', according to the statement.

The dispute has led to a shift in approach, with authorities now seeking input from residents to shape the festive displays. The meeting aims to create a plan that balances tradition with the village’s growing private light installations. For now, the community’s pushback has ensured that Christmas trees will remain part of Zermatt’s holiday season.
