Zohran Mamdani’s polarizing rise reshapes US political debates

New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani is drawing national attention as a rising figure in American politics. A member of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), he identifies as a democratic socialist within the Democratic Party. His policies and public image are now under scrutiny from both supporters and opponents alike.

Recent polls reveal mixed views on Mamdani. A Reuters-Ipsos survey found 36% of Americans viewed him unfavourably, while 33% had a favourable opinion. Another poll by Marquette University Law School showed a similar split, with 38% holding an unfavourable view compared to 29% favourable.

Mamdani’s political rise highlights shifting attitudes toward democratic socialism in the US. His policies on housing and transport have gained traction, while his unfavourable ratings remain lower than those of key rivals. The upcoming White House meeting underscores his growing role in national political debates.
