Zürich opposes admitting injured Gaza children over security and capacity fears
The canton of Zürich has raised concerns over plans to admit injured children from Gaza and their accompanying adults. Officials warn that local asylum structures are already stretched to their limits. They also question whether security checks on arrivals from the war zone can be thorough enough.
Swiss asylum facilities are currently operating at full capacity. Zürich’s cantonal government acknowledges the severe suffering of children in Gaza but fears that voluntary admissions would add further strain. Authorities have stressed that even with security checks, risks remain when bringing people from a conflict area into the country.
The canton’s position reflects worries about both security and capacity. If the admissions go ahead, Zürich’s asylum system would face greater pressure. For now, authorities are pushing for aid to be delivered on the ground rather than expanding intake in Switzerland.
