Zurich Rejects Gaza Children, Opts for Direct Aid Amid Security Concerns
The Zurich government has decided against accepting injured children from Gaza, opting instead to allocate funds directly to the region. This decision comes amidst concerns about logistical challenges and security risks.
The Zurich executive council cited substantial logistical hurdles in providing medical and psychological care for the children, as well as ensuring access to healthcare and social security benefits for the approximately 100 accompanying adults. They also expressed concern about potential ties between individuals and Hamas or other groups, deeming the admission an 'incalculable risk'.
Jean-Pierre Gallati, a Swiss Federal Council member and Aargau government councilor from the SVP party, publicly opposed the admission of children from Gaza into Switzerland. He voiced security concerns, fearing that among the 80 accompanying family members, there might be individuals connected to Hamas. The canton of Fribourg also rejected the federal government’s request, citing unclear conditions for the children's medical and financial care. The Zurich cantonal government has definitively refused to take in wounded children from Gaza due to overwhelming security concerns.
The Zurich government's decision not to accept injured children from Gaza reflects their preference for direct financial aid and their commitment to addressing logistical and security concerns. The canton of Fribourg and the Zurich cantonal government have also rejected the federal government’s request, citing similar concerns.
