Alberta voter data leak forces woman to flee after separatist group exposes 2.9M records

A separatist group in Alberta has leaked the personal details of nearly three million voters, including addresses. The incident has forced at least one woman to flee her home after her information was exposed. Authorities are now investigating the breach and its impact on those affected. The Centurion Project, a separatist organisation, published a list containing the names and addresses of 2.9 million Alberta electors. The data was shared through an app, which Elections Alberta later shut down with an injunction.

The leaked information has already caused serious harm. An Edmonton woman, facing intimate partner violence, had to break her lease and relocate with her children over the weekend. Aaron Paquette, the city councillor for Dene ward, is assisting her and condemned the breach as deeply troubling. Elections Alberta restricts voter lists to elected officials, political parties, and authorised personnel for specific uses. The unauthorised release has prompted an investigation, with the RCMP also involved. The Centurion Project has stated it will cooperate with the probe. Prime Minister Mark Carney described the breach as deeply concerning. The group’s actions have raised questions about data protection and the safety of vulnerable individuals.

The app responsible for the leak has been removed, but the fallout continues. The investigation will determine whether further legal action is needed. Those affected, including the woman forced to relocate, now face ongoing challenges due to the exposure of their private details.
