Anzac Day trading rules vary wildly—here's what's open in your state
The Anzac Day public holiday weekend is about to begin, with each state exercising their own restrictions for businesses and retailers.
While essential services and some retailers remain open, such as petrol stations and chemists, other shops are facing closures during the annual commemorations.
NSW
- Coles, Woolworths, Aldi, Bunnings, Target, Kmart, Big W: Closed all day.
- Dan Murphy's, BWS, Liquorland: Most stores closed all day (stores attached to ALH hotels can open).
- IGA: Some stores will be open, but you should check online before visiting.
New South Wales will now be implementing full day restrictions for businesses on Anzac Day thanks to new laws passed last year. Previously business and retail could reopen after 1pm. Businesses including chemists and petrol stations will remain open but supermarkets and bottle shops must close all day. Cafes, newsagencies and other small shops will also be allowed to open.
VICTORIA
- Coles, Woolworths, Aldi, Bunnings, Kmart, Big W: Can open from 1pm.
- Dan Murphy's, BWS: Most stores open from 1pm.
- Aldi: Special opening hours in place, with many stores opening from 1pm.
- Target, IGA: Most stores appear set to open but check online before visiting.
Shops will close in Victoria on Anzac Day until 1pm. This will apply to supermarkets and bottle shops however essential services such as chemists and petrol stations may remain open all day. Victoria does not have a separate public holiday on Monday.
QUEENSLAND
- Coles, Woolworths, Aldi, Bunnings, Kmart, Target, Big W: Closed all day.
- Dan Murphy's, BWS: Most stores open from 1pm.
- IGA: Open.
Major chains and retailers will remain shut on Saturday, however, smaller and independent stores can open from 1pm. Queensland does not have a separate public holiday on Monday.
SOUTH AUSTRALIA
- Coles, Woolworths: Suburban stores open 12pm - 9pm. CBD stores open 12pm - 5pm.
- Dan Murphy's, BWS: Most stores open from 1pm.
- Kmart: Most stores close but Rundle Mall will be open from 1pm.
- Big W, Target, Aldi: Closed.
Anzac Day restrictions in South Australia are slightly different to other states, with some larger retailers in Adelaide CBD and a selection of other locations exempt from closure rules. These shops are allowed to open between 12pm and 5pm on Saturday. Smaller stores and essential services can remain open throughout the day. South Australia does not have a separate public holiday on Monday.
AUSTRALIAN CAPITAL TERRITORY
- Coles, Woolworths, Aldi, Bunnings: Open.
- Dan Murphy's, BWS, Big W: Open from 1pm.
- Kmart, Target: Some stores to open from 1pm.
- IGA: Open.
Both Anzac Day on Saturday, April 25, and Monday, April 27, are observed as public holidays in the ACT. However, trading hours for businesses are fully deregulated meaning they can operate as usual without restrictions on both Saturday and Monday.
WESTERN AUSTRALIA
- Coles, Woolworths, Aldi, Kmart, Big W, Target: Closed.
- Dan Murphy's, BWS: Most stores open from 1pm.
- IGA: Open.
Both Anzac Day and Monday are also observed as public holidays in WA. All major retailers will be expected to stay closed on Anzac Day, however, Monday will act as a normal public holiday with hours up to the business' discretion. Essential services such as petrol stations and chemists, as well as small businesses such as cafes will be allowed to remain open.
TASMANIA
- Coles, Woolworths, Aldi, Bunnings: Open from 12.30pm.
- Dan Murphy's, BWS: Most stores open from 1pm.
- Kmart, Big W, Target: Open from 1pm.
- IGA: Open.
Major businesses and retailers are prohibited from opening their stores before 12.30pm on Anzac Day. Essential services such as petrol stations and chemists, as well as small businesses such as cafes will be allowed to remain open. Tasmania does not have a separate public holiday on Monday.
NORTHERN TERRITORY
- Coles, Woolworths, Aldi, Bunnings, IGA: Open.
- Dan Murphy's, BWS: Open from 1pm.
- Kmart, Big W, Target: Open from 1pm.
Similar to the ACT, businesses are allowed to operate without any restrictions on Anzac Day. The NT does not have a separate public holiday on Monday.
