Award-Winning Filmmaker Kim Dies After Brutal Assault Sparks Legal Reversal
Filmmaker Kim, known for her award-winning short No One’s Daughter, died on 7 November 2025 after a violent assault left her brain-dead. The attack occurred on 20 October, sparking public outrage and renewed legal action against two suspects. Kim gained recognition in 2016 when her short film No One’s Daughter won Best Director at the Police Human Rights Film Festival. Her career took a tragic turn after she was assaulted in October 2025, leading to her death weeks later.
Initially, the Namyangju branch of the Uijeongbu District Court rejected arrest warrants for the two suspects, Lee and Lim. Judges ruled that neither posed a flight risk, allowing them to remain free.
Following Kim’s death, prosecutors formed a special investigation team. After questioning her son, they re-filed the warrant requests. This time, the court approved the arrests, issuing warrants for both individuals. The case now moves forward with Lee and Lim in custody. Prosecutors will continue their investigation, focusing on the circumstances of the assault. Kim’s death has prompted calls for stricter measures against violent crime.
