Soon Winnetou Traffic Lights in Bad Segeberg? - Bad Segeberg may swap traffic lights for Winnetou's iconic silhouette
Bad Segeberg could soon see Winnetou guiding pedestrians at crosswalks. A local group has proposed replacing standard traffic light figures with the iconic character’s silhouette. The idea aims to celebrate the city’s famous Karl May Festival and boost its cultural identity. The initiative comes from BBS, which argues that the Karl May Festival is Bad Segeberg’s biggest economic and cultural event. Last year’s festival attracted over 445,000 visitors, reinforcing its importance to the city. To strengthen this connection, BBS has formally suggested modifying pedestrian signals to feature Winnetou instead of the usual green figure.
The proposal involves replacing the diffusers inside traffic lights with the character’s outline. Before any changes, the city administration will first contact Kalkberg GmbH, the festival’s organiser, to address copyright concerns and agree on a shared design. Several committees will review the plans next week. A final decision rests with the city council, which is set to vote on the matter on February 24.
If approved, the new traffic lights would become a permanent nod to Bad Segeberg’s cultural heritage. The project also seeks to reinforce the city’s brand by tying everyday infrastructure to its most popular event. The outcome of the council vote will determine whether Winnetou’s silhouette appears at crosswalks in the coming months.
