Baden-Württemberg cracks down on motorcycle safety as fatal crashes rise
Baden-Württemberg has launched its annual 'Motorcycle Safety Month' campaign in May. The initiative comes as the 2026 riding season begins earlier than usual, with authorities already reporting several serious accidents on the roads. Last year, the region saw a slight drop in overall motorcycle accidents. However, the number of fatal crashes increased. Data shows that over 60 percent of these deadly incidents were caused by rider error.
To tackle the issue, around 1,200 police officers will carry out roughly 240 enforcement operations throughout the campaign. Patrols will focus on popular routes, where extra checks will take place. The campaign also features informational booths and partnerships with road safety groups. Authorities are urging riders to take precautions before hitting the road. They recommend a full technical inspection of motorcycles after winter storage. Police also advise easing into the season with careful riding and reduced speeds.
The campaign aims to reduce accidents by combining stricter enforcement with rider education. With the season starting sooner than expected, officials hope these measures will help prevent further serious incidents. Riders are being reminded to prioritise safety as they return to the roads.
