Germany tightens fuel price rules as violations of the 12-hour limit persist

The coalition government has given the Federal Cartel Office new powers to monitor fuel pricing. Recent court decisions, however, have limited some of its enforcement measures. Meanwhile, SPD leader Matthias Miersch has called for stricter oversight after identifying repeated breaches of the 12-hour rule for fuel price updates. The government introduced a €1,000 bonus scheme to support employees during economic pressures. Employers have been urged to distribute this payment directly to their staff.

Attention has also turned to fuel pricing regulations. The 12-hour rule requires stations to adjust prices only once every 12 hours, preventing rapid fluctuations. Miersch highlighted ongoing violations of this rule and expects authorities to issue fines for non-compliance. While acknowledging the fuel discount’s impact, Miersch argued that prices should have dropped further. He has called on the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs to review the situation with the Cartel Office. If needed, stricter regulations could follow to ensure fairer pricing.

The Cartel Office now faces the task of enforcing fuel price rules despite recent legal setbacks. Fines for breaches of the 12-hour rule are expected, while the government continues to push for greater price transparency. The €1,000 bonus remains a key measure to ease financial strain on workers.
