Bavaria's Söder rejects social media age limits, backs real-name rules instead

Bavaria's Minister-President and CSU leader Markus Söder has spoken out against proposals from sections of the SPD and CDU to restrict social media access for young people.

"Often, it's our friends in the Social Democrats who are at the forefront when it comes to bans. I'm more cautious on this," he told the Mediengruppe Bayern (Wednesday edition). While many issues could be debated, "right now, this isn't one of the most pressing questions."

In his view, a far more important step would be requiring real-name registration online. "At street protests, there's a ban on masks for good reason—so why not in the digital world? That would change a lot," Söder argued.
