Berlin's Greens push to revive €9 summer transport ticket amid cost-of-living crisis

Berlin’s Green Party is pushing for the return of the €9 monthly public transport ticket this summer. The proposal comes alongside calls for energy subsidies to ease rising living costs. Party leaders argue the move would offer immediate relief to residents struggling with high prices.

The Green Party has formally submitted a motion to the state legislature. It urges the Senate to lobby for the temporary reintroduction of the €9 ticket at the federal level and through regional transport associations. According to the party, the scheme should run for three months during summer.

The nationwide €9 ticket in 2022 proved highly popular, with over 30 million users. The Greens describe it as a success that provided direct, fair, and climate-friendly support. Werner Graf, co-leader of the party’s parliamentary group, stressed that Berliners need practical relief that reaches them quickly. The proposal also includes an energy subsidy to make electricity more affordable. The Greens argue that these measures would ensure mobility for all, boost energy independence, and encourage climate-conscious travel. Their focus remains on swift action that resonates with the public during a time of soaring costs.

If approved, the €9 summer ticket would offer three months of discounted travel. Combined with energy subsidies, the plan aims to reduce financial pressure on households. The Greens insist the measures are both necessary and achievable in the short term.
