Berlin S-Bahn Chief Peter Buchner Dies - Berlin's S-Bahn Mourns Long-Serving CEO Peter Buchner

Peter Buchner, the long-serving CEO of Berlin's S-Bahn rail network, has passed away at the age of 58. Buchner, who led the network for 16 years, was remembered as a 'true railroader' by his successor, Harmen van Zijderveld. Following Buchner's death, Karsten Preißel, the director of production, will take over as interim CEO.

Buchner's tenure began in 2009 during a severe crisis, when a significant portion of the S-Bahn fleet was grounded due to maintenance problems. Despite the challenges, he successfully steered the network back to stability. Under his leadership, the company celebrated its 100th anniversary last year.

Buchner was a trained business economist who dedicated his entire career to the railway sector. His dedication and expertise were instrumental in overcoming the network's disruptions and ensuring smooth operations for millions of passengers.
