A billionaire from North Rhine-Westphalia falls victim to a "shock call" scam, losing jewelry, watches, cash, and gold. Police are investigating and describe the financial loss as "extremely high."
A billionaire from North Rhine-Westphalia has been defrauded of several million euros after falling for a so-called "shock call" scam, according to investigative sources who confirmed a report by Bild.de to the German Press Agency (dpa). Authorities have only disclosed that the damage amounts to a "very high sum" and have established a special investigative commission.
"The unknown perpetrators used a so-called shock call as their method," a police spokesperson told dpa. "They claimed that the victim's daughter had caused a fatal traffic accident in which a pregnant woman—the daughter of a Serbian diplomat—had died."
Jewelry, watches, cash, and gold handed over
To meet the diplomat's alleged demands, the scammers insisted on receiving money or valuables. "There were two handover situations, but due to the ongoing investigation, we cannot disclose further details," the spokesperson said. "The perpetrators made off with jewelry, watches, cash, and gold."
The criminal police have set up a task force to investigate the case, the spokesperson added. "Officers are in regular contact with the victim and their family. Several leads have been pursued—some have already been followed up, while others are still under investigation."
