Duisburg scammer steals elderly woman's jewellery posing as utility worker
Police in Duisburg are warning residents about scam artists posing as utility workers. A 90-year-old woman was recently tricked by a man pretending to be a water company employee. The incident has prompted an investigation by the Criminal Investigation Department (Kriminalkommissariat 32). The fraudster approached the elderly woman at her home, claiming he needed to check the water pressure. He instructed her to hold a hose while he carried out the supposed inspection.
During the deception, the man told her to remove her gold jewellery to avoid an electric shock. She handed over her wedding ring and pearl earrings before realising the man was not genuine. Once he had the valuables, he disappeared and did not return. The suspect is described as being between 1.65 and 1.70 metres tall, with dark hair and dressed in a black suit. Authorities are now seeking witnesses who may have seen him or have further information. Police have advised the public not to allow unknown individuals into their homes if no visit is expected. They are also urging people to warn elderly relatives about these fraudulent schemes.
The investigation remains ongoing as officers work to identify the suspect. Residents are being reminded to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activity. The case serves as a warning about the risks of letting strangers into homes without proper verification.
