Bob Harvie leads Democratic race for Pennsylvania's 1st District
The race for Pennsylvania’s 1st Congressional District is heating up. Bob Harvie leads the Democratic primary contest, with Lucia Simonelli as his opponent. The winner will face Republican incumbent Brian Fitzpatrick in November’s general election. Bob Harvie has secured key backing in his bid for the Democratic nomination. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee included him among its four supported candidates in Pennsylvania. Governor Josh Shapiro has also endorsed Harvie, adding further weight to his campaign.
Brian Fitzpatrick has held the seat since 2016, winning most elections by nearly double digits. His narrowest victory came in 2018. In 2022, he won re-election by nearly 10 points, even as Governor Shapiro carried the same district by 20 points.
Fitzpatrick currently chairs the bipartisan Problem Solvers Caucus in the U.S. House. He is the only Pennsylvania Republican representing a district that Kamala Harris won over the president in 2024. He has also stated that he would leave the Republican Party if the state’s closed primaries ever opened up. The primary election will decide Fitzpatrick’s Democratic challenger. The winner will then take on the incumbent in a district where recent elections have shown strong Democratic support. The outcome could shape the political balance in Pennsylvania’s delegation.
