Bremen Honors Dieter Stegmann with Federal Cross of Merit for Disability Rights
Dieter Stegmann, a long-time advocate for disability rights in Bremen, has received Germany’s Federal Cross of Merit. The honour recognises his four decades of work supporting people with disabilities. A ceremony at the House of Citizenship marked the presentation by Senator Dr. Claudia Schilling.
Stegmann’s career began as a social pedagogue at conpart Bremen e.V. By 1984, he had joined the board of the State Association for Self-Help of People with Disabilities (LAGS). He later led the organisation as chair from 2008 to 2020.
Over the years, he helped draft Bremen’s Disability Equality Act and reformed integration assistance under a human rights framework. His efforts also focused on implementing the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in the region. Even after retiring, he continues to serve on administrative committees related to disability rights. Senator Dr. Claudia Schilling, responsible for labour, social affairs, youth, and integration, presented the award. The ceremony highlighted Stegmann’s lasting impact on participatory structures and legislation for disabled individuals in Bremen.
The Federal Cross of Merit acknowledges Stegmann’s decades of dedication to disability rights. His work has shaped policies and support systems in Bremen. Though retired, he remains involved in committees that uphold the rights of people with disabilities.
