Bundestag Refuses to Issue House Passes - AfD Sees 'Discrimination' - Bundestag blocks seven AfD staff from parliamentary access over security concerns
The Bundestag administration has blocked seven employees of the AfD party from receiving security passes. These staff members cannot enter parliamentary buildings and have had their salaries withheld. The decision follows updated reliability checks introduced last year. Since the last election, the Bundestag has refused passes to two staff from the AfD parliamentary group and five working for AfD lawmakers. All parliamentary employees must pass a reliability check before gaining access. Requests can be denied if there are justified doubts about an applicant’s reliability.
A year ago, the wording of the checks was changed from ‘threats’ to ‘risks’. AfD politician Baumann criticised this adjustment, claiming it allows for arbitrary decisions. The Bundestag’s rules aim to prevent security risks and ensure the institution runs smoothly.
The administration confirmed seven denials but did not name the affected faction. The AfD now plans to challenge the rulings in court, targeting Bundestag President Julia Klöckner of the CDU. The seven denied employees remain barred from Bundestag premises. Their salaries have been suspended pending the outcome of any legal action. The AfD’s challenge could test the limits of the updated reliability check process.
