Busan to Host Historic 2026 World Heritage Committee Session
Busan is set to host the 48th session of the World Heritage Committee in July 2026. This marks the first time the event will take place in Korea. The city, known for its historical role during the Korean War, is preparing to welcome delegates from around the globe. An inspection team recently visited Bexco in Busan from April 27 to Thursday. They reviewed preparations for the event, including administrative processes like visa issuance, accommodation, and participant registration. The session itself will run from July 19 to 29.
Busan, Korea’s second-largest city after Seoul, once served as the nation’s temporary capital during the Korean War (1950–1953). It housed government functions, supported international cooperation, and sheltered displaced civilians. The local government is now pushing to have 11 key wartime sites—such as the temporary government complex, the U.S. Embassy, and Ami-dong Tombstone Culture Village—added to UNESCO’s World Heritage list.
The World Heritage Committee, responsible for decisions under the World Heritage Convention, will hold its main discussions in Busan. City officials hope the event will strengthen both domestic and international networks for future heritage nominations. The 2026 session will highlight Busan’s wartime history and its ongoing efforts to preserve key sites. If successful, the inscription of these locations could boost the city’s global recognition. The event also provides an opportunity to showcase Korea’s cultural heritage on an international stage.
