Nizhny Novgorod Honors Memory of Chernobyl Liquidators

Chernobyl's forgotten heroes honored decades after deadly disaster

Forty years ago, on April 26, 1986, one of the worst man-made disasters in history occurred—the Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident. More than five thousand residents of Nizhny Novgorod took part in the cleanup efforts. Today, around 2,300 of them remain alive.

Veterans of the Chernobyl response and relatives of the deceased gathered at the Spassky Old Fair Cathedral and the "Grieving Angel" monument. People brought flowers and portraits of their loved ones, honoring them with a moment of silence.
