Could Canada ever join the EU? A surprising poll sparks debate

A growing number of Canadians appear open to the idea of joining the European Union. A recent poll by The Globe and Mail revealed that nearly 60 percent support exploring the possibility. Meanwhile, Finnish President Alexander Stubb has suggested that a much larger EU—one that could include Canada—might be possible in the future. The idea of Canadian EU membership has gained attention after Stubb’s comments. While speaking in Brussels, he described a vision of an expanded union that could stretch beyond Europe’s traditional borders. His remarks came as public interest in Canada grew, following the poll results.

Canada and the EU already share strong ties. Both are NATO allies and cooperate closely on trade, security, and climate policy. The existing free trade agreement between Canada and the EU has also opened up economic opportunities, reducing barriers for businesses on both sides.

However, the German government has made it clear that Canadian membership is not a current priority. Officials emphasised that while cooperation remains robust, formal accession talks are not on the agenda. For now, Canada’s potential EU membership stays in the realm of speculation. The poll reflects public curiosity, but no formal steps have been taken. The existing trade and political partnerships continue to shape relations between Canada and the bloc.
