Police President: Gelsenkirchen Case Not an 'Ocean's Eleven' - Daring Gelsenkirchen Bank Heist Leaves 3,000 Safety Deposit Boxes Emptied
A daring late December heist at the Sparkasse bank in Gelsenkirchen-Buer saw thieves drill into the vault and empty over 3,000 safety deposit boxes. The burglars made off with gold, cash, and valuables worth millions of euros, leaving authorities to piece together a complex investigation. The criminals broke into the bank’s vault by drilling through its walls. Once inside, they forced open more than 3,000 safety deposit boxes, stealing contents valued in the millions. Police President Tim Frommeyer described the perpetrators as hardened criminals whose actions harmed thousands of victims and destroyed livelihoods.
Frommeyer dismissed comparisons of the heist to the Hollywood film *Ocean’s Eleven*, calling the crime far more damaging. He noted that the operation likely involved a larger group of accomplices, increasing the risk of errors. Investigators now have a vast number of forensic leads to follow. Despite the scale of the crime, Frommeyer expressed confidence that the culprits would be caught. He emphasised that the more people involved in such a complex scheme, the higher the chance of slip-ups that could lead to their arrest.
The Gelsenkirchen heist left behind a trail of financial ruin for countless deposit box holders. Authorities continue to analyse evidence, with Frommeyer’s team working to track down those responsible. The investigation remains ongoing as police follow up on potential leads.
