Democrats Hutchison & Miller Secure Second Term in New Jersey's 4th District
In a significant political development, Freshmen Assemblymen Dan Hutchison and Cody Miller, both Democrats from New Jersey's 4th district, have secured a second term. They led their republican party opponents by a collective 55.4%-44.6% in the district.
The 4th district, which includes parts of Gloucester and Camden counties, has a history of voting against Donald Trump in presidential elections. Despite a shift of about 6 points to the right in the 2022 redistricting, the republican party did not manage to win the district. Miller and Hutchison, who spent nearly $650k on their campaign compared to their republican party challengers' $75k, have been instrumental in pushing legislation on affordability and housing in Trenton.
The duo's victory comes after State Sen. Fred Madden and Assemblywoman Gabriela Mosquera, who represented the district previously, decided not to seek re-election in the redrawn district. Madden, who served in the Senate from 2004 to 2022, retired due to health reasons and his desire to spend more time with his family. His successor, Latham Tiver, won the seat in the 2021 elections. Miller and Hutchison's win is also notable as it comes despite republican party hopes of riding coattails from Jack Ciattarelli's gubernatorial campaign. Additionally, a super PAC affiliated with South Jersey power broker George Norcross spent over $500k to support the incumbents.
The re-election of Dan Hutchison and Cody Miller signals the 4th district's continued support for democratic party representation. Their victory, despite the district's shift to the right and republican party efforts, demonstrates the incumbents' strong connection with their constituents and their effective legislative work on affordability and housing.
