Doug Mastriano nominated as US Ambassador to Slovakia by Trump
State Sen. Doug Mastriano has been nominated to serve as the United States Ambassador to Slovakia by the Trump administration. The retired military colonel and combat veteran first entered politics in 2019 when he won a seat in the Pennsylvania state Senate. Mastriano ran for governor in 2022 with Donald Trump’s endorsement but lost to Democrat Josh Shapiro by 17 points. After the defeat, he considered campaigns for U.S. Senate in 2024 and governor in 2026 but ultimately chose not to pursue them.
Known for his outspoken views, Mastriano has criticised COVID-19 restrictions and questioned the results of the 2020 U.S. presidential election. He has also publicly criticised the Pennsylvania Republican Party for backing State Treasurer Stacy Garrity in the gubernatorial race.
His nomination has drawn support from some Republican colleagues, including Senate President Pro Tempore Kim Ward and State Sen. Camera Bartolotta. U.S. Sen. Dave McCormick has also expressed approval. However, U.S. Sen. John Fetterman has not yet commented on the nomination or its potential confirmation.
If confirmed, Mastriano would join other Pennsylvanians in ambassadorial roles under Trump, such as Christine Toretti and Jeff Bartos. The nomination now moves to the confirmation process. Mastriano’s military background and political experience will likely be key points of discussion. His potential appointment would add another Pennsylvania representative to the Trump administration’s diplomatic team.
