Drunk driver flees after crashing into guardrail on State Road 614
A serious traffic incident took place on State Road 614 between Wolfenbüttel and Salzgitter-Thiede on Sunday evening. A 35-year-old driver lost control of his Seat, struck a guardrail, and fled the scene before police tracked him down nearby. The crash happened at around 9:15 p.m. when the driver veered off the road, sideswiping the guardrail. Instead of stopping, he left the scene, prompting a witness to alert authorities.
Police quickly located the man and pulled him over. A breathalyzer test revealed a blood alcohol level of approximately 0.20%, well above the legal limit. Officers took a blood sample for further analysis and confiscated his driver's license. The driver now faces criminal charges for hit-and-run and endangering road traffic. Authorities have launched formal proceedings against him. In an unrelated case, police in Regensburg arrested a 36-year-old man from Landkreis Kelheim after a high-speed chase on the A93. The pursuit involved ten patrol cars and ended when the driver trapped himself in a dead-end street. He was unlicensed and under the influence of drugs. Witnesses are being sought, and charges have been filed.
The 35-year-old from Sunday's crash remains under investigation, with his licence suspended. The blood sample results will determine further legal steps. Meanwhile, the Regensburg case highlights ongoing efforts to combat dangerous driving and drug-related offences on German roads.
