Ekaterinburg and Revda tighten security for May holidays to protect war memorials
Ekaterinburg and Revda have introduced strict security measures ahead of the May holidays. Alcohol sales and e-scooter use will be banned in the city centre and several parks. The steps aim to protect war memorials from vandalism and damage. Sverdlovsk Region Governor Denis Pasler ordered heightened security for May 1 and May 9 in Ekaterinburg. Guard duty at the memorials began on April 30 and will last until May 11. From May 8 to 11, security teams will monitor the sites around the clock.
The effort involves the volunteer patrol unit Narodnaya Druzhina of Revda Urban District, the private firm Grad, and police patrols. Revda Mayor Tatyana Klepikova officially signed the decree outlining these measures. Authorities in Revda have also strengthened protection for monuments honouring war casualties.
Four years ago, Revda gained national attention when stray pigs roamed its streets. Locals reported the animals damaging lawns, children’s playgrounds, and even darting into traffic. The restrictions and added patrols are designed to safeguard memorial sites during the holidays. Ekaterinburg’s ban on alcohol and e-scooters will remain in place until the celebrations end. Security teams will ensure the monuments stay undamaged throughout the period.
