Elderly Bielefeld man loses savings in public prosecutor impersonation scam
An 87-year-old man from Bielefeld fell victim to a scam after receiving a call from someone posing as a public prosecutor. The fraudster convinced him to hand over his money, claiming it was for his own protection. Police are now investigating the incident and seeking witnesses.
The scam began when the elderly man answered a call from a person identifying themselves as public prosecutor Herr Lemke. The caller warned that a foreign gang was planning to break into his home. To keep his savings safe, the man was told to place his money in his trash bin, where an employee from the prosecutor’s office would collect it.
The victim was reassured he would receive the money back within 14 days. Only later did he realise he had been deceived. He immediately informed his relatives, who then contacted the police. Authorities are now asking anyone with information about suspicious activity near Senner Hellweg and Hangstraße around the time of the incident to come forward. Witnesses should contact Criminal Investigation Division 15 to assist with the ongoing investigation.
The scam targeted an elderly resident, exploiting trust in law enforcement to steal his money. Police are urging the public to remain vigilant against similar fraud attempts. Anyone with relevant details is encouraged to contact investigators as soon as possible.
