Estonia debates whether to keep displaying Ukrainian flags in public spaces
A debate over the display of Ukrainian flags in public spaces has reignited in Estonia. The discussion began when a user in a Tallinn Facebook group questioned why the flags had been removed from local schools. The mass use of Ukrainian flags in Estonia started after a Riigikogu resolution in February 2022. This was noted by Gert Uiboed, an adviser on symbols at the State Chancellery.
Opinions on the issue have been divided. Some believe the flags should stay until the war in Ukraine ends. Others argue that symbolic support has served its purpose. A few think Estonia can support Ukraine without constant displays of its symbols.
Similar arguments have emerged in Saaremaa. There, users have also debated the removal of Ukrainian flags from public view. Some see the disappearance as a worrying sign, while others insist Estonia should prioritise its own flag in public spaces. Many view the removal as a notable symbolic change. The debate highlights differing views on how Estonia should show solidarity with Ukraine. Some still see the flags as necessary, while others believe their time has passed. The discussion continues across social media and local communities.
