Reza Pahlavi, Son of Iran's Last Shah, Visits Berlin

Exiled Iranian prince urges Europe to abandon appeasement of Tehran

Berlin (dpa) – Iranian opposition figure and former crown prince Reza Pahlavi has called on Germany and European governments to take stronger action to bring about fundamental change in Iran. He also warned against continuing a policy of appeasement toward Tehran's regime. "In my view, Europe has an important—indeed, a very important—role to play. But I believe Europe is undermining its own potential," he told the German Press Agency (dpa).

Pahlavi, who lives in exile in the United States, has positioned himself as a transitional leader, though his role remains highly controversial within Iran's opposition movement.

"I expect Western governments, including Germany, to abandon the approach they have taken for more than four decades—one of appeasement in the hope that the regime would change its behavior. That strategy has yielded nothing over all these years," Pahlavi said.

He argued that Tehran's leadership would never provide satisfactory solutions to the instability and crises it has created, both domestically and abroad. There is no diplomatic resolution, he added, that could eliminate the threats posed by Iran's rulers—threats that also target Europe.
