Feds buy Ontario farmland for Arctic radar despite fierce local backlash
The federal government has purchased farmland near Barrie, Ontario, for new Arctic radar sites. Despite local opposition and petitions in Parliament, officials insist the locations are essential for the project’s strict requirements.
The installations will monitor Arctic airspace but must be built far to the south—below the 46th parallel and the Trans-Canada Highway. The government has acquired land in Clearview Township for a receiver site and in Kawartha Lakes for a transmitter site. These locations were chosen after a search failed to find alternatives that met the project’s technical needs.
Residents and MPs have criticised the decision, submitting petitions against National Defence’s purchase of farmland. They argue the sites disrupt local communities and question why Arctic radar must be placed so far south.
Officials explain that the system’s design demands specific latitude and spacing between installations. The long-range radar is expected to improve threat detection in the Arctic by making monitoring faster and more reliable.
Despite the backlash, the government has refused to reconsider the locations. It maintains that no other sites can meet the project’s complex and inflexible requirements. The radar installations will proceed as planned in Clearview Township and Kawartha Lakes. The government’s stance leaves little room for relocation, despite ongoing local objections. Once operational, the system aims to strengthen Arctic airspace surveillance from southern Ontario.
