Four Swiss cantons unite to build emergency shelter for at-risk girls
The Basel-Land government has joined forces with the cantons of Zurich, Aargau, and Solothurn to create an emergency shelter for girls and young women. This collaborative effort aims to provide a safe haven for those in need, with other cantons also having the option to secure places in the facility.
The Basel-Country parliament initially instructed the government to plan such a shelter. The government, while acknowledging the urgent necessity, found the proposed deadline of March 2026 too ambitious. However, after withdrawing the demand for an accelerated deadline, the motion to establish the shelter was adopted without debate. The government will now draft a proposal to set up the facility in cooperation with one or more cantons, with the Basel-Land government taking the lead in this collaborative effort.
The emergency shelter for girls and young women is set to become a reality through the cooperation of these cantons. This joint venture not only addresses the urgent need for such a facility but also opens up the possibility for other cantons to participate and provide support.
