Frankfurt Airport bust reveals 654kg of marijuana hidden under solar panels
Customs officers at Frankfurt Airport uncovered a massive marijuana smuggling operation in late March. The drugs were hidden beneath solar panels in an air freight shipment from the United States. A 30-year-old man from Nauheim has since been arrested on suspicion of organising the illegal import.
On March 22, 2026, Frankfurt customs officials discovered around 654 kilograms of marijuana during a routine inspection. The cannabis had been divided into 1,309 airtight, heat-sealed plastic packages. Investigators later confirmed the shipment was destined for a shell company based in Darmstadt.
Authorities moved quickly, issuing a warrant for the arrest of the suspected organiser. The 30-year-old Nauheim resident was detained and brought before an investigating magistrate at Darmstadt District Court on March 25. A pretrial detention order was enforced against him shortly after. The case follows a similar operation in North Rhine-Westphalia earlier this year. In January, four suspects—including a 38-year-old main suspect—were arrested in connection with a marijuana smuggling scheme involving office chairs. A fifth suspect, aged 54, was later detained as investigations expanded. The Frankfurt Customs Investigation Office and the Darmstadt Public Prosecutor's Office have now taken over the latest case. Further inquiries into the smuggling network are currently underway.
The arrested suspect remains in custody as the investigation continues. Authorities are examining potential links to other smuggling operations and additional individuals involved. The case highlights ongoing efforts to combat large-scale drug trafficking through German airports.
